Research Science Institute (RSI) Acceptance Rate

The Research Science Institute (RSI) program is one of the most prestigious STEM summer programs out there. However, this also means that it is one of the most selective. Let’s dive deeper into the details of this widely acclaimed program’s acceptance rate.

Acceptance Rate

RSI receives more than 1500 applications domestically and 300 applications internationally every year from highly qualified students. Of those applicants, only 100 get accepted.

However, RSI splits its spots between students in the United States and international students. Typically, two-thirds of these students are from the United States and one-third are international.

United States Acceptance Rate

RSI tries to accept students from many different states. This means that typically, they will accept at least one student from every US state. This number may fluctuate by year: sometimes a state will have many student representatives, other times, a state will have none. It is clear that RSI chooses the most exceptional students while also ensuring a wide range of representation.

Because RSI reserves spots for international students, typically there are around 60-70 American representatives. This means that the acceptance rate for American students is less than 5%.

International Acceptance Rate

RSI is currently partnered with 61 other countries who have been represented at RSI. Like representation for the United States, RSI tries to accept students from a wide variety of backgrounds. For this reason, accepted international students will come from many different countries.

RSI accepts around 30 international students. This means that the acceptance rate for international students is around 10%. However, there is also a different application process for international students which varies by country.

How do I get into RSI?

To earn your rightful place as a part of RSI, you need to set yourself apart from everyone else. Alongside strong grades, standardized testing scores, and recommendation letters, you also need exceptional essays and demonstrated interest in the STEM field. This can include competing in science fairs, conducting scientific research, or STEM clubs.
