Cancer is one of the most widespread diseases, affecting millions of people worldwide. Researching it as a high schooler is exciting, and a passion project here is a great way to learn on your own and spark new interests.

Keep in mind that the main point of high school research is to learn and understand what a study can show. These projects aren’t meant to produce brand-new findings (though that’s not impossible). They’re a first dip into a vast ocean of knowledge.

Investigating specific roles in the development of breast cancer

Breast cancer remains one of the most lethal cancers, and understanding how the tumor develops is a step toward better treatments. For this project, take a deep dive into a specific gene that plays a role in breast cancer development and how it behaves under different circumstances.

From there, you can branch off in many directions: evaluating the gene’s potential as a biomarker, how it interacts with other pathways, or which alterations make it resistant or impactful.

Interested in another type of cancer? Investigate that instead. Many cancers have unique mechanisms in how their tumors develop.

Cytotoxic effects of natural compounds

Certain anticancer ingredients found in fruits, vegetables, and other natural compounds can combat tumor growth. Take a deep dive into what those ingredients are, how they behave and affect tumor growth, and why they uniquely prevent proliferation. From there, you can explore their potential against tumors of different sizes.

Exploring cancer biomarkers

Biomarkers are molecules in tissues, blood, or other body fluids that indicate a condition, disease, or normal process. For this project, choose a cancer type and read up on the markers known to help guide patient treatment early.

There are many ways to detect cancer biomarkers, so it’s up to you to figure out which is best and most cost-effective.

Cell signaling pathways

Cell signaling pathways are series of chemical reactions that let cells communicate and respond to their environment. In cancer, cells ignore the signals that would normally stop them from growing. Studying these pathways can reveal potential therapeutic targets.

AI-based image analysis for cancer diagnosis

For this project, you’d give an AI model many cancer screening images, both with detected tumors and without, and train it to detect potential tumors. The goal is to use algorithms that spot patterns in images, often beyond what the human eye can see, to make predictions that aid clinical decisions.

Medical imaging modalities

Learn about the imaging modalities used in radiomics and radiogenomics research, including X-ray, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), and ultrasound. Compare the principles, strengths, and limitations of each for cancer imaging.

Cancer metabolism

Cancer metabolism is how cancer cells generate the energy to grow and spread. Study altered cellular metabolism in cancer, such as the Warburg effect and glutamine addiction. This project centers on researching safe ways to target metabolic pathways as a treatment strategy, and which methods are safest or preferred.

Novel approaches in immunotherapy

Immunotherapy uses the body’s immune system to recognize and attack cancer cells, with promising results across cancer types. This project explores current immunotherapy approaches and how to improve them. As always, start with a literature review before investigating potential targets, such as tumor-specific antigens or immune cell subsets.

Cancer health disparities and their effects

There are real differences in cancer incidence, mortality, survival rates, and access to care across population groups. Understanding these disparities is essential to addressing inequities in diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes. Because the issue is so multi-faceted, start small by finding patterns and differences before drawing broader connections, then propose solutions, large or small.

RNA in cancer

RNA (ribonucleic acid) has become a promising tool in cancer treatment, offering new ways to target cancer cells and disrupt tumor growth. Unlike traditional therapies, RNA-based treatments can specifically target cancer-associated genes and pathways while minimizing damage to healthy cells. You can branch into RNA therapy, vaccines, drug delivery systems, or gene editing.
