Summer programs are one of the best ways for a high schooler to stand out, and CMU’s Summer Academy for Math and Science (SAMS) is one of the strongest. This guide covers what SAMS is, how to apply, and how to give yourself the best shot at getting in.
About SAMS
SAMS at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is a free program for students from communities underrepresented in STEM. As a SAMS Scholar, you take a rigorous curriculum taught by CMU faculty, mixing classroom instruction, hands-on projects, and mentorship.

Alongside the academics, you’ll also build connections with peers from across the country.
Goals of the program
- Build a diverse, supportive community of STEM students aiming for top universities.
- Strengthen students’ commitment to STEM fields.
- Broaden access to the opportunities that STEM opens up.
- Equip students with the skills to succeed in STEM.
The program is designed to mirror the first semester of the CMU freshman experience: orientation, demanding academics, and hands-on learning, in a supportive setting.
What it involves
Part 1: a virtual jumpstart that builds the skills you’ll need for the in-person program.
Part 2: a 5-week, in-person pre-college program on CMU’s campus, with full days of courses and meetings.
What’s the acceptance rate?
There aren’t any official figures. I did some digging and found an estimate published by the Indigo Research program. I can’t confirm it’s accurate, but it’s a reasonable guide. Keep in mind that this applicant pool is very different from a college’s, so SAMS is actually harder to get into than a college with a similar rate.
Carnegie Mellon SAMS’ acceptance rate is around 6.875%, which makes it a highly selective program.

Why SAMS is worth it
SAMS stands out for one big reason: it’s completely free and fully funded, and merit-based. That makes it competitive, since selection comes down to your ability and potential in STEM, not your ability to pay. Being free also opens it up to talented students from any background. And it’s run by Carnegie Mellon, a top STEM university, so the curriculum, projects, and faculty access are the real thing.

Eligibility
Age: at least 16 by the program start date.
Residency: U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
Grade: a high school junior at the time you apply.

- Two letters of recommendation (one from a current math instructor)
- Two essays
Tips to get accepted
SAMS is hard to get into, but careful preparation improves your odds. A few things that help:
Academic strength
- Do well in math and science. Strong grades in these classes show your foundation and commitment.
- Take the hardest courses available, including AP or honors if your school offers them.
Don’t burn yourself out taking courses you’re not ready for just to get into a program.
- Test scores (optional): strong PSAT, SAT, or ACT scores can help, especially in the math and science sections.
Show your talent
- Competitions: entering regional or national math and science competitions shows ability beyond the classroom. Awards are a plus, but consistent participation matters.
- Research: look for research through science fairs, internships, or your own projects. It shows initiative and real depth in a field. Here’s a guide on getting started.
- Community involvement: volunteering or STEM outreach shows you use what you know to help others.
The application itself
The essays are the one thing you fully control when you sit down to apply. Don’t procrastinate on them.
Recent applications have asked two essays (check the current application for the exact prompts):
- Why SAMS? Be specific about what draws you to the program and how it fits your goals.
- Diversity and inclusion: share experiences that show how you’d contribute to a positive, inclusive learning environment.
- Recommendations: choose teachers (including your math instructor) who can speak to your ability and your passion for STEM.
- Submit everything on time and double-check it meets the requirements.
The Bottom Line
