Introduction
Want to learn how to get into PROMYS India, what the acceptance rate is, what past problems (and their solutions) look like, when to apply, and more? Let’s begin.
What is PROMYS India?
Many of you have heard of PROMYS, a prestigious and selective math summer program for students with a deep passion for mathematics. Less well known is that PROMYS has a branch specifically for students residing in India, hence the name PROMYS India.
In short, PROMYS India is a rigorous six-week residential summer program for students in Standards/Grades 9-12. It focuses on lectures and team-based problem solving, taught by top professors covering highly advanced mathematics.
It is hosted on the campus of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru, a renowned public research university in STEM. Widely regarded as one of India’s finest institutes, IISc can help bolster a student’s love of mathematics and connect them with professors and resources at a high level.

PROMYS India is closely modeled after its parent program, the Program in Mathematics for Young Scientists (PROMYS), which has been running at Boston University in the United States since 1989. So what are the differences between the two? A few comparisons:
- Like its U.S. counterpart, PROMYS India emphasizes deep mathematical exploration rather than routine number crunching, bridging the gap toward strong foundational and competition math, which is what colleges look for in students pursuing STEM and mathematics.
- Both programs focus on engaging students in problem solving, with an emphasis on learning from one another.
- PROMYS India tailors its content to the Indian context, incorporating culturally relevant examples and challenges.
Scholarships for PROMYS India
One perk of PROMYS India is that all accepted students receive a full scholarship covering tuition, hostel accommodation, and meals. Compared to the roughly $6,100 tuition for PROMYS USA, this makes acceptance into PROMYS India even more competitive, and all the sweeter to earn.

Applicants can also apply for need-based funds to cover travel and laundry expenses, hosted by the partners of the PROMYS India committee, which can make the overall experience virtually free. It’s well worth taking advantage of PROMYS India if you’re accepted.
Acceptance Rate for PROMYS India
The organization doesn’t reveal an exact acceptance rate, but here’s an estimate. With only about 34 students selected each year and thousands applying, the rate is likely under 1%.
The application notes that you don’t have to solve all of the problems on the problem set to be accepted. Still, at Rishab Academy we’ll be straight with you: to have a real chance, you should aim to solve close to all of them.

The process is holistic, so if you can’t answer the entire problem set, make up for it with a strong letter of recommendation from a teacher, an excellent academic record, and a genuine, demonstrated history in mathematics.
Wait, a Problem Set?
Yes. One of the most important parts of the PROMYS India application is working through the problem set. It’s the same set as PROMYS USA, and despite being only 8 problems (due by February 1st, about a month earlier than PROMYS USA), the problems are genuinely difficult.
Want an example? Here’s the first problem from the PROMYS 2024 problem set.

As you can see, this problem needs a more careful approach than students are used to in school. There can also be several valid approaches, each of which has to be explained clearly in your solution. The process by which you reach the answer often matters more than the answer itself.
Even if you didn’t apply this year but plan to in the future, give the problem above a try for practice.
Hint: one path to a solution uses a bit of partial fraction decomposition. You can see from the example that:

So consequently:

Note that “a” and “b” are both positive integers, so try some values and see what trends you notice. Have fun.

When Does PROMYS India Take Place?
PROMYS India runs for about six weeks in the summer. In 2024 it ran from May 5th to June 15th, but the dates can change, so confirm the current year’s schedule on the program’s site.
