TOP 10 Neuroscience Research Ideas for High Schoolers

Neuroscience covers how the brain works, from processing what your senses take in to the disorders that disrupt it. If you’re a high schooler curious about the brain, a hands-on project is a great way to learn how it processes information, adapts, and responds to its surroundings.

The ten ideas below are practical and doable at the high school level. They range from how sleep affects thinking to demonstrating neuroplasticity, and each one gives you room to design an experiment, analyze your results, and draw conclusions.

Why do science research?

Research teaches you to ask good questions and think critically, and it lets you go deep on something you actually care about. You’re not just learning what’s already known. You’re adding to it, which is exactly what colleges and competitions want to see.

  1. Brain-computer interface (BCI) basics

Build a simple brain-computer interface. With an EEG sensor, you can show how brainwaves can talk to an external device, for example a basic BCI that moves a cursor or switches lights based on specific brainwave patterns. You get hands-on time with real neuroscience hardware and a look at how BCIs are used in medical and assistive technology.

  1. Memory and learning

Test different learning techniques head to head. Compare mnemonics, spaced repetition, and rote memorization to see which works best, measuring recall accuracy over time. It’s a clean way to show how study strategy affects what the brain retains, and the results are genuinely useful for your own studying.

  1. Gene editing and the brain (research review)

You can’t run CRISPR at home, so treat this one as a research and literature-review project rather than a lab experiment. Gene-editing tools like CRISPR-Cas9 let scientists make precise changes to DNA, with possible treatments for conditions such as Huntington’s disease, spinal muscular atrophy, and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. For your project, explain how gene editing works, review where the research stands for a specific neurological condition, and discuss the ethical and safety questions it raises. A clear, well-sourced review is a real contribution.

  1. Neuroplasticity demonstration

Show the brain adapting in real time. Have participants learn a new skill or play a hard game, then track how they improve with repeated practice. That improvement is neuroplasticity in action, and it’s central to how rehabilitation and learning work.

  1. Neuroscience and artificial intelligence

Compare biological neural networks with the artificial ones behind modern AI. Look at how neuroscience has inspired AI, and how AI is used to model brain function. Lining up the strengths and limits of each is a good way into a project that sits between two fast-moving fields.

In 2018, Rishab Jain built a machine-learning algorithm that tracks the pancreas in a patient’s scans so radiotherapy can target a tumor as accurately as possible. He won the title of America’s Top Young Scientist at the 3M Young Scientist Challenge (and $25,000).

He explains how he did it in this video.

“In the radiotherapy treatment where radiation is applied to kill tumor cells, my tool tracks the pancreas in the scan itself,” Jain explains. “When the radiation hits, it hits the pancreas accurately and efficiently so it can help treat the tumor much more effectively.”

  1. Sleep and cognitive function

Study how sleep affects thinking. Look at how different sleep durations or schedules change memory, attention, and problem-solving. Keep it safe and ethical (no real sleep deprivation), for instance by comparing well-rested and tired performance using volunteers’ normal routines. It’s a strong project and a good prompt for talking about sleep hygiene.

  1. Neuroanatomy models

Build 3D models of the brain to show its key structures. Use 3D printing or craft materials to make accurate versions of regions like the cortex, hippocampus, and cerebellum, then label them and explain what each does. It’s a clear, visual way to get across how the brain is organized.

  1. Sensation and perception

Test how the brain interprets what your senses pick up. Use optical illusions for vision, taste tests for taste, or sound cues for hearing. The gap between sensation (the raw signal) and perception (what your brain makes of it) is where the interesting results are.

  1. Stress and brain function

Look at how stress affects focus, memory, and decision-making. Use simple indicators like heart rate or a short questionnaire to gauge stress in volunteers, then see how it tracks with their performance on cognitive tasks. It’s a direct link between mental health and how the brain works, and a natural lead-in to stress-management strategies.

  1. Neurodegenerative disease awareness

Build an educational project around a disease like Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s. Research the symptoms, causes, and progression, then survey where current research and treatments stand. Presenting it clearly is the goal, and it doubles as a way to make the case for why neuroscience research matters.
