Best STEM Universities in USA: Top 5 STEM Schools

There are a lot of strong STEM universities in the U.S., and it’s hard to tell which ones really sit at the top. Here’s a guide to five of the best STEM schools in the country, with what makes each one stand out. Acceptance rates and testing policies shift year to year, so treat the numbers here as recent ballparks and confirm the current details with each school.

1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology

With an acceptance rate around 4%, MIT is one of the best universities in the world in any field, and its STEM programs are world-renowned. It’s extremely competitive, which is exactly why that rate is so low. MIT also reinstated its SAT/ACT requirement, so scores are part of the application again.

One thing MIT weighs heavily is extracurriculars, especially ones tied to your intended major. To see what Harvard undergraduate Rishab Jain considers the best extracurriculars for high schoolers, check out the video below.

2. Harvard University

With an acceptance rate around 3.5%, Harvard is one of the hardest colleges in the U.S. to get into. Admitted students typically have very high GPAs and test scores (think SAT around 1580+ or ACT 35-36), and Harvard reinstated its testing requirement for recent cycles. On the STEM side it’s just as rigorous: it’s home to Math 55, often called the hardest math class in the country, where even International Math Olympiad medalists are pushed.

Rishab Jain used high school research as his spike into Harvard, and he has free resources and masterclasses on how to do the same. If you’re even a little drawn to science research and want a shot at top universities, his content on exactly that is a good place to start.

3. Stanford University

With an acceptance rate around 3.7%, Stanford is one of the best universities in the world and a powerhouse in California. Founded more than 150 years ago, it’s known for the innovative and entrepreneurial people who come out of it, and it sits right next to Silicon Valley.

4. California Institute of Technology

Caltech is one of the most selective STEM schools anywhere, with an acceptance rate around 3%. It’s small, intense, and entirely focused on science and engineering, which makes it one of the strongest STEM environments in the country.

One important update: Caltech ended its test-blind moratorium and now requires the SAT or ACT again (effective for students applying in fall 2024 onward). It had been test-blind during the pandemic years, but that’s no longer the case, so plan to submit strong scores. Beyond that, you’ll need to show real depth in your intended major through focused extracurriculars. Want a nudge in the right direction? Here’s the extracurricular strategy that got Rishab Jain into Harvard.

5. Princeton University

With an acceptance rate around 4-5%, Princeton stands among the best Ivy League schools in the country, just behind Harvard’s numbers. It’s an elite option for STEM and beyond.

On testing: Princeton is test-optional for the current admission cycles, so you won’t be at a disadvantage applying without an SAT or ACT score for now. That’s changing soon, though. Princeton has announced it will require standardized testing again starting with the 2027-28 cycle (students enrolling in fall 2028), so check Princeton’s policy for the year you’re applying. Either way, a strong test score can open doors to scholarships and opportunities you’d otherwise miss.

How do you actually get in?

So you know which STEM schools you want to aim for. What’s next? The video below is a good starting point.
