The Bank of America Student Leaders program is one of the premier summer programs for outstanding high school students in the US. This post covers it in detail: the acceptance rate, application requirements, and how to get in.

What is Bank of America Student Leaders?

Sponsored by Bank of America, the Student Leaders program offers 8-week paid internships to around 300 high school juniors and seniors each year. Students work with well-known nonprofits (like Habitat for Humanity) and learn about the role they play in connecting community needs with resources.

Selected Student Leaders are also invited to an all-expenses-paid, week-long Student Leaders Summit in Washington, D.C., usually held in late July.

The students hail from many diverse backgrounds, but are united by their drive and commitment. Through paid internships with local nonprofits and participation in a national leadership summit, they gain practical work and life experience.

There’s no cost to participate. In fact, students are paid: in the past, Student Leaders have earned around $5,000 over the eight weeks.

Bank of America Student Leaders Eligibility

As with any summer program, make sure you meet the eligibility requirements before applying:

  1. Be a current junior or senior in high school.
  2. Be legally authorized to work without sponsorship.
  3. Be able to work 35 hours a week for 8 weeks.
  4. Be able to attend the Student Leaders Summit at the end of the program.
  5. Be in good standing at your high school.
  6. Not have participated in the program before.
  7. Not be an immediate family member of a Bank of America employee.

Bank of America Student Leaders Acceptance Rate

The program’s corporate prestige draws a lot of interest and applications each year. Historically, it has had an acceptance rate of around 4%.

Bank of America Student Leaders Application Requirements

Admission is competitive, so make sure your application includes everything required:

  1. One letter of recommendation from your current high school, submitted by the deadline.
  2. A list of community activities and volunteering experience.
  3. Short essays (prompts range from a leadership challenge you’ve faced to why you want to be a Student Leader).
  4. Optional: a resume of up to two pages.

How to Get Into Bank of America Student Leaders

Since this program is so competitive, you need an exceptional application to stand out. If you’re a hopeful, follow these steps.

Start early

Giving yourself ample time shows in the quality of your application. For competitive programs like this, start your essays and short responses weeks before the deadline so you can reread and revise.

Starting early also gives your recommender enough time to prepare. The rule of thumb is to ask for letters of recommendation at least two weeks in advance.

A typical application timeline looks like this (confirm the exact dates on the program’s site):

  1. Fall: applications open.
  2. Mid-January: application deadline.
  3. Through the end of March: interviews (not all locations offer them).
  4. April: admission decisions.

Highlight your personality and achievements

Use your application to your advantage. Personalize your essays as much as you can to convey who you are and why you deserve a spot.

Your extracurriculars matter as much as the character you show in your essays. The program emphasizes nonprofit work and leadership training, so think about what you’ve done to better your community and how you’d use your skills to advance social welfare more broadly.

Your unique theme is your differentiating factor, whether it’s environmental awareness or policy research. Write attention-grabbing essays (open with a hook or in medias res) and use memorable, impactful language. Show your humanity and be vulnerable when it fits. Explain the why behind what you do, not just the what.

For help building your personal theme, see this article on crafting a compelling college application.

Fulfill all application criteria

Make sure you’ve met every requirement before the deadline. Don’t risk a void application over late or missing materials.

Concluding Remarks

Bank of America Student Leaders is an excellent way to gain practical work experience and mentorship from nonprofit leaders. It’s the kind of experience colleges look on favorably, and it adds a boost to your application.

And don’t worry if summer programs don’t work out. They’re just one way to spend the summer. Watch the video below for how to land independent internships that can be just as valuable.
