Ultimate Guide to the National Science Bowl: Biology

Science Bowl isn’t really about the trophies, though those are nice. It’s about the thrill of the buzzer, the satisfaction of nailing a tough question, and out-answering your opponents on pure knowledge. Between you and the national championship, though, there are some hurdles. This guide breaks down how to take your team from a scrappy bunch to Science Bowl contenders.

What is the National Science Bowl?

The National Science Bowl (NSB), run by the U.S. Department of Energy, is an annual academic competition held in the United States. It tests middle and high school students across a broad range of STEM disciplines: biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy, and mathematics.

Unlike a traditional timed test, the NSB uses a fast question-and-answer format modeled on quiz bowl competitions. That rewards rapid recall under pressure and makes for an engaging, competitive environment. If you work well under short-term pressure, it’s a great competition to try. The National Science Bowl has been held annually since 1991, with regional tournaments leading up to the national finals.

Steps to Participate

To qualify for the National Science Bowl, teams first compete in regional competitions. Here’s the general process:

  1. Form a team: teams are typically four students, one alternate, and a teacher who serves as advisor and coach.
  2. Register: coaches register their teams for a regional competition. Registration usually opens in the fall for the following year’s competition.
  3. Compete in regionals: regional competitions take place across the country, usually starting in January. The winning team from each region advances to the national finals.
  4. Advance to nationals: the national finals are held in Washington, D.C., where teams from across the country compete for the title.

When you’re ready to register, refer to the official National Science Bowl resources from the U.S. Department of Energy so your information is fully current. That site can be hard to navigate, so this guide aims to summarize the essentials.

Tournament Structure

  • Rounds: Science Bowl matches run as a series of rounds that include both toss-up questions and bonus questions, at both regionals and nationals.
  • Toss-up questions: open to both teams. The first team to buzz in gets to answer. Answer correctly and you earn points plus the chance at a bonus question. These can be multiple-choice or short-answer.
  • Bonus questions: awarded to the team that answered the toss-up correctly. Only that team can answer the bonus for additional points.

General Science Bowl Preparation

Understand the Competition

Get familiar with the format. Understand the structure of the NSB, the types of questions (multiple-choice and short-answer), the subjects covered (biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy, and mathematics), and the rules. Get used to the question style, too. It’s likely very different from competitions you’ve done before.

Team Formation

Pick the right team members. With so many subjects, splitting up so each person owns one is a good way to cover everything in detail. Choose teammates who can recall facts quickly, and make sure someone is strong at mental math. The questions usually aren’t complicated, but the fast pace puts a premium on quick recall and mental calculation.

Studying for the Competition

The Department of Energy provides official resources for competition preparation. They’re very useful and can guide your prep, but they may not be enough on their own, since they don’t teach the concepts you’re expected to know. You can also run out of practice questions quickly, so use them strategically.

Biology Study Resources

Here is the list of all the sources the DOE recommends studying from. I’ve looked at the high school resources and prepared suggestions on how to study them so you can do well.

General Biology Textbooks

Glencoe Biology, McGraw-Hill (High School)

  • Pros:
    • Clear, concise language that makes foundational concepts easy to grasp.
    • Helpful diagrams, charts, and review questions to solidify your understanding.
    • May already be available from previous school classes, saving you money.
  • Cons:
    • Built for a high school audience, so the level of detail may be less than what’s needed for some advanced NSB topics.

Campbell Biology (College Intro)

  • Pros:
    • Well-known for its comprehensive coverage of biology topics.
    • Often cited in academic sources, making it a good reference for further exploration.
    • Used at many universities, so affordable used copies are easy to find.
  • Cons:
    • Quite lengthy, with in-depth explanations that may be more detail than necessary for NSB.
    • The volume of information can be overwhelming if you’re short on study time.

Raven Biology (College Intro)

  • Pros:
    • Well-written and organized, presenting information in an easy-to-follow way.
    • A good balance of detail and breadth across many biological concepts.
    • Similar to Campbell Biology in affordability on the used market.
  • Cons:
    • Like Campbell Biology, it may have more detail than what’s directly tested on the NSB.
    • The college-level presentation can be slightly harder to grasp than a high school text.

Advanced Biology Textbooks

Alberts, Molecular Biology of the Cell (Advanced Undergrad)

  • Pros:
    • A leading resource for in-depth exploration of cellular processes.
    • Valuable if you hit NSB topics that dig into cell biology at a deeper level.
  • Cons:
    • Highly detailed and challenging without a strong biology foundation.
    • Best for targeted study of specific cell biology concepts, not general review.

Costanzo Physiology (Advanced Undergrad)

  • Pros:
    • Excellent for an in-depth understanding of physiological systems.
    • A great reference if the NSB throws your team physiology questions.
  • Cons:
    • Its specialized focus on physiology makes it less ideal for general biology review.
    • Used copies can be harder to find than introductory texts.

Raven, Biology of Plants (College Level)

  • Pros:
    • A comprehensive look at plant biology, valuable if the competition has a botany-heavy round.
    • A deeper understanding of plant structures, functions, and processes.
  • Cons:
    • Less relevant for general biology topics that aren’t plant-focused.
    • Like Costanzo Physiology, used copies can be harder to find.

My Recommendations

Foundational knowledge

Start with Glencoe Biology or the first half of Campbell/Raven Biology to solidify core concepts. Then use previous exams to see which areas are tested in depth and where your knowledge gaps are. You may want to skip to the next step if you’ve taken AP Biology and retain a lot of it.

Targeted review

  • Use the practice questions on the DOE National Science Bowl website to identify your strengths and weaknesses.
  • Focus your textbook reading on in-depth explanations of topics you find challenging in the practice questions.
  • If you struggle with cell biology, work through specific chapters in Alberts’ Molecular Biology of the Cell.
  • Likewise, for physiology or botany-heavy sections, consult Costanzo Physiology or Raven Biology of Plants.

Don’t neglect the areas you find easy. Skim the relevant chapters in Campbell/Raven Biology to keep a broad understanding of biological concepts.

I haven’t personally worked through all these textbooks, but based on what I could find online, this plan makes the most sense. Adjust it as you go to get the most out of your time.
