Ultimate Guide to West Virginia Science and Engineering Fair (WVSEF)

The West Virginia Science and Engineering Fair (WVSEF) is the annual state science fair for middle and high school students across West Virginia. Hosted by the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE), it brings together students to present research projects, compete across categories, and win prizes and scholarships. It’s also the path to the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) for West Virginia students.

How WVSEF works

  • Categories: WVSEF covers a wide range, including engineering, biological sciences, physical sciences, behavioral sciences, mathematics, and computer science. There’s room for most scientific interests.
  • Qualification: students qualify through regional science and engineering fairs held across West Virginia. The regionals are the first stage, and they’re how you earn a spot at the state fair.
  • Judging: you present with a display board and an oral presentation. Judges, who are experts in their fields, evaluate your methods, results, conclusions, and how well you present.
  • Where it leads: WVSEF has sent students on to national and international fairs, including ISEF. Top projects at the state level can advance.

Categories

WVSEF’s categories cover a broad range of scientific interests, including:

  • Engineering and Technology
  • Biological Sciences
  • Physical Sciences
  • Behavioral and Social Sciences
  • Earth and Environmental Sciences
  • Mathematics and Computer Sciences
  • Translational Medical Sciences
  • Plant Sciences
  • Microbiology
  • Biochemistry
  • Biomedical and Health Sciences
  • Cell and Molecular Biology

How to qualify

  • Middle school:
    • Enter a regional science and engineering fair in your area.
    • Present your project to the judges.
    • Advance to WVSEF by following the guidelines for project approval, Scientific Review Committee (SRC) approval, and registration.
  • High school:
    • Do the research and experimentation for your project.
    • Compete at the regional level.
    • Follow the additional guidelines for project details, display boards, videos, and review processes to qualify for WVSEF.

How to do well

  • Start early. Give yourself enough time to collect data, analyze it, and refine the project.
  • Pick the right category. Choose one that fits your project and plays to your strengths.
  • Know the judging criteria. Focus on being thorough, creative, and relevant, and on presenting well.
  • Practice your presentation. Rehearse so you can explain your research clearly and confidently.
  • Be original. Find a topic or approach that brings something new to the field.
  • Show real-world impact. Explain how your research could actually be used and why it matters.
  • Keep it doable. Plan a project you can realistically finish with the time, resources, and skills you have.
  • Follow a clear method. Use the scientific method or the engineering design process, as fits your project.
  • Build a good display. Make a board that clearly shows your methods, findings, and what they mean.
  • Stay safe. Follow safety rules throughout your research and experiments.

Advancing to national and international fairs

The top projects at WVSEF can advance to national and international science and engineering fairs, including Regeneron ISEF. Follow the rules for advancing carefully, and you could represent West Virginia on a national or global stage.

The bottom line

WVSEF is a great way to build your research, critical thinking, and presentation skills, and it’s a real path toward bigger competitions. Start early, pick the right category, present clearly, and you’ll give yourself a strong shot. Good luck.
