The Arizona Science and Engineering Fair (AzSEF), hosted by the Arizona Science Center, is the state’s annual science fair for middle and high school students. Students present research projects and compete for prizes and scholarships, and AzSEF is Arizona’s path to the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).
How AzSEF works
- Categories: AzSEF covers a wide range, including engineering, biological sciences, physical sciences, behavioral sciences, mathematics, and computer science. There’s room for most scientific interests.
- Qualification: students qualify through regional science and engineering fairs across Arizona. These feed into the state-level AzSEF.
- Judging: you present with a display board and an oral presentation. Judges, who are experts in their fields, evaluate your methods, results, conclusions, and how well you present.
- Where it leads: AzSEF has sent students on to national and international fairs, including ISEF. Top projects at the state level can advance.
Check the official AzSEF page for current dates and rules.

How to qualify
- Middle school:
- Enter a regional science and engineering fair in your area.
- Present your project to the judges.
- Advance to AzSEF by following the guidelines for project approval, Scientific Review Committee (SRC) approval, and registration.
- High school:
- Do the research and experimentation for your project.
- Compete at the regional level.
- Follow the guidelines for project details, display boards, videos, and review processes to qualify for AzSEF.
How to do well
- Start early. Give yourself enough time to collect and analyze data.
- Pick the right category. Choose one that fits your project and your interests.
- Know the judging criteria. Focus on being thorough, creative, and relevant, and on presenting well.
- Practice your presentation. Rehearse so you can explain your research clearly and confidently.
- Be original. Find a topic or approach that brings something new to the field.
- Show real-world impact. Explain how your research could be used and why it matters.
- Keep it doable. Plan a project you can realistically finish with your resources and skills.
- Follow a clear method. Use the scientific method or the engineering design process, as fits your project.
- Build a good display. Make a board that clearly shows your methods, findings, and conclusions.
- Stay safe. Follow safety rules throughout your research and experiments.
Advancing to national and international fairs
The top projects at AzSEF can advance to national and international science and engineering fairs, including Regeneron ISEF. Follow the rules for advancing carefully, and you could represent Arizona on a national or global stage.
The bottom line
AzSEF is a great way to build your research, critical thinking, and presentation skills, and it’s a real path toward bigger competitions. Start early, pick the right category, present clearly, and you’ll give yourself a strong shot. Good luck.
