How to Get Scholarships for College as a High Schooler (full guide)

1. Slocum Research & Education Foundation Scholarship Program

The Slocum Research & Education Foundation is dedicated to enhancing musculoskeletal care throughout all stages of life via community-based research, education, and collaboration. This program is tailored for versatile high school seniors with aspirations in healthcare, health-related research, and public or community health.

Award: at least $1,500

Eligibility:

  • Highschool senior
  • Academic achievement involving Slocum’s values
  • involvement in extracurricular activities
  • leadership activities
  • Community service
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • GPA 3.0 or more
  • Students must reside in Lane County and be accepted to an accredited college or technical school program in the United States.

Applications must be received by Friday, April 5th, 2024. Award recipients will be notified by May 7th, 2024 and a reception will be held on May 14th, 2024 at 5:15pm.

2. Oregon High School Senior Scholarship

This scholarship has been established to assist an alcohol and drug-free graduating high school student who plans to pursue higher education at a university, community college, or trade school in Oregon.

Average award: $500

Eligibility:

  • High school senior
  • Plan to attend a university, community college, or trade school in Oregon
  • Not have written referrals or citations of any kind for alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs
  • Graduate from an Oregon high school, charter school, or homeschool

Application is due by April 10th.

3. ORABSE Scholarship

The Oregon Alliance of Black School Educators scholarship is an award that helps Black students across Oregon accept higher education opportunities to pursue their goals.

Average award: $1,500 up to $10,000

Eligibility:

  •  Must identify as Black, African-American, of African descent, or African Diaspora (fully or partially).
  • High school senior
  • Reside in Oregon
  • Have a GPA of at least 3.0

Applications must be completed by March 11th.

4. Bailey Passion scholarship

This scholarship is for those who want to positively impact the world through their craft, innovation, or expression of their passion. The Bailey Passion Scholarship is uniquely provided to those with a passion unrelated to sports or academics.

Average award: $1,000 to $10,000

Eligibility:

  • Legal resident of the United States
  • Current Portland Public Schools (PPS) high school senior
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Must be accepted by an accredited post-high school/post-secondary education program including accredited two- and four-year colleges, universities, vocational-technical and trade schools (“Accredited Program”) pending receipt of a high-school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and planning to attend the education program in the fall

Print application period begins on February 1 at 12:00 pm Pacific Standard Time (“PST”) and ends at 11:59 pm Pacific Daylight Time (“PDT”) on May 1 of each calendar year (the “Print Application Period”).

5. Portland Chinese Education Scholarship

The mission of the Portland Chinese Scholarship Foundation is to honor all Oregon high school graduates of Chinese ancestry and to provide those qualified students with scholarships in their pursuit of higher education. Over the last five years, PCSF has presented 164 scholarships and 118 scholastic awards totaling $152,000. 

Average award: $500 to $3,000

Eligibility:

  • At least 25% of Chinese ethnicity
  • U.S. citizen or a permanent resident of the United States of America (USA).
  • Be a student who is a member of an Oregon high school graduating class with a minimum of four semesters or two years of attendance in the State of Oregon
  • GPA of 2.75 or higher.
  • Will attend an accredited college or university in the USA
  • Community service and leadership activities in your application can be validated with the organization for the activity and number of volunteer hours

Applications must be completed BY 5pm on Friday, May 17, 2024.

6. Beat The Odds Scholarship

The Beat the Odds Scholarship program is a partnership between Stand for Children Oregon and The Renaissance Foundation. This scholarship works to connect students to a path of success and education.

Average award: up to $16,000

Eligibility:

  • Student enrolled in an Oregon public high school, who will graduate in 2024.
  • Have a 3.0 GPA. Students with a GPA between 2.5 and 2.9 may be considered
  • Plan to earn a bachelor’s degree from an accredited 4-year college in the United States
  • Demonstrated financial need.

Applications must be completed by September 13th.

7. Resilient Roots Scholarship

The Resilient Roots Scholarship commends students who have overcome hardships and hurdles. This skill, also known as resilience, will benefit you both as you take your next steps out of high school, and for the rest of your life. When you’re resilient, you’re rooted in what matters to you and what you want to achieve. 

Award: $2,000 (three scholarships in total)

Eligibility:

  • Currently High School Seniors (c/o 2024)

Applications must be completed by April 15, 2024, at 11:59 PT.

8. Abby’s Closet Dream Scholarship

Abby’s Closet Dream Scholarship aims to provide financial assistance to female high school seniors to pursue education. Although the scholarship is closed for 2024, keep an eye out in early 2025 for the next opportunity!

Average award: $2,500

Eligibility:

  • High school senior attending school in Oregon or Washington
  • Seeking a professional certification, associate, or bachelor’s degree
  • Female

9. Black United Fund of Oregon’s Scholarships

Black United Fund of Oregon has a set of scholarships for black students residing in Oregon to encourage students to attend college or post-secondary institutions.

Average award: $500 – $3,000

Eligibility:

  • Reside in Oregon’s Portland metro area
  • Identify as black, African-American, or of African descent
  • Be a graduating high school senior
  • Accepted into a post-secondary institution
  • At least a 2.5 GPA (some require higher)

Scholarships have a deadline between January and April.

10. Reach for Your Peak Scholarship

Reach for Your Peak Scholarship awards those who are exclusively in Washington and Oregon who have gone above and beyond. Although the scholarship is closed for the years 2023-2024, keep an eye on when it opens again in the Fall!

Average award: $2,000 for 7 students

Eligibility:

  • Reside in Washington or Oregon
  • Be a junior or senior in high school

Applications must be completed by the end of the year, December 31st!
