Why science research?
Research teaches you to ask sharp questions and work toward real answers, and it lets you go deep on something you actually care about. Done well, a project also shows colleges a kind of initiative that grades alone can’t.

1. Solar-Powered Water Purification
Design a system that uses solar energy to purify water through distillation or filtration. It pulls together renewable energy, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics, and tackles a real problem: clean water access. Test it on different water sources to see how well it actually works.
2. Smart Home Automation with IoT
Build a system that connects appliances like lights, cameras, and thermostats through a central hub. You’ll work with communication protocols, microcontrollers, and a language like Python or C++, and end up with a project that shows off both your coding and your circuit design.
3. Electric Vehicle Charging Stations
Design a smart EV charger that adjusts charging based on energy availability and demand, maybe with dynamic pricing or a reservation system. It covers electrical engineering, energy management, and data analytics, and addresses a fast-growing real-world need.

Rishab Jain, winner of the Regeneron Young Scientist Award (i.e. TOP 3, winning $50,000!) at ISEF 2022, worked on “Synthetic DNA Engineering With ICOR“. The project worked in synthetic biology, improving protein production in E. coli, which matters for vaccine development. The core idea was codon optimization: choosing the DNA sequences that get a cell to produce the most protein. Standard methods often ignore how the cell actually behaves, which makes them inefficient. Jain built ICOR, a tool that uses a recurrent neural network (RNN) with a bidirectional long short-term memory (LSTM) architecture, trained on a dataset of high-expression E. coli genes.
7. 3D-Printed Prosthetics
Design and 3D-print prosthetic limbs tailored to individual needs. You’ll get into biomechanics, materials science, and 3D modeling, with the goal of making something lightweight, durable, and affordable.
8. Energy-Efficient Building Design
Design a building that minimizes energy use with green tech like solar panels, good insulation, and smart thermostats. It blends thermodynamics, renewable energy, and architecture, and you can build a scale model to test the idea.
9. Assistive Technology for People with Disabilities
Design a device for a specific need, like a voice-controlled wheelchair or a sensory aid for visually impaired users. It covers mechanical design, programming, and user-centered design, with a focus on making the device genuinely usable.
10. Wireless Power Transfer
Build a system that transfers energy between devices without cables, using electromagnetic induction or resonant coupling. You’ll experiment with designs to improve efficiency and range, and explore concepts in power electronics.
